Why you should ALWAYS hire a professional decorator

Why you should ALWAYS hire a professional decorator

When it comes to decorating your home, you essentially have 2 choices:

  1. Do it yourself (DIY)

  2. Hire a professional

Below I’ll discuss the benefits and pitfalls of each process.

j1.jpg

The DIY method:

Ok, you’ve been putting it off for 6 months, but now it’s time. With a surge of energy, you decide this is the weekend you want to decorate the living room.

Let’s look at what that involves:

Clear the room: First things first, you need to clear all the shelves and cabinets, before moving all the heavy furniture out of the room. (Or at least into the middle)

Protection: You’ll now need to protect the floor and all the items you just moved in case of accidents.

j2.jpg

An example of a well protected room, ready for decorating

I’m guessing you won’t have plastic floor protection or enough dustsheets, so you’ll likely use old bedsheets.

The problem with bedsheets, however, is they don’t have plastic backing. So, the paint seeps straight through.

Not to worry, you can just be just be extra careful!

j3.jpg

Getting the paint and other tools: Next up, you’re in the car because you need to visit the local paint stockist.

The range of products available can be confusing. Can you be sure you’re getting the best tools for the job?

Here you are met by hundreds of different paints and thousands of colours.

You go for a middle of the range paint. You’re not quite sure what’s best for the job, so you think it’s safer not to go for the cheapest option. But also, you don’t want to spend too much money on the trade stuff.

Whilst you’re there, you also need to buy all the tools.

Your thought process might be something like this:

‘’Roller, brush, tray…check…oh hang on…do I need filler? And caulk? And a caulk gun?

Oh, and then I’ll need to sand the filler down. Will I do this by hand? That’ll take ages. But an electric sander is expensive! Sod it, I won’t bother with the preparation. It’ll be ok.

But what about masking tape!? There are 30 different types here. Which one is best? Will the cheap one peel off the paint when I use it? Am I any good at cutting in?’’

j4.jpg

Clothing: Next decision, which outfit do you want to sacrifice?

I mean, you’re almost guaranteed to get paint on it.

Once you’ve decorated in an outfit, you’ll never be able to wear it again

j7.jpg

Completing the job: 3 days past schedule and 5 takeaway dinners later you’ve got the paint on the walls.

It looks ok.

The cutting in is a bit dodgy and there are some splodges on the woodwork, but nothing major.

It could do with another coat of paint, but by this point you just can’t be bothered.

You’ve only had 2 serious arguments with your partner, and only damaged one of the kids’ awards.

So, all in all not too bad.

DIY can leave you frustrated and fed up

Peeling paint due to poor preperation.

Tidying up: Ugh, no. All that effort and now you’ve got to put the heavy furniture back!

One slip and you could need a new carpet. Is it worth the risk? A professional will be insured against accidents like this.

One slip and you could need a new carpet. Is it worth the risk? A professional will be insured against accidents like this.

Things can go wrong: Nightmare situation. Imagine you choose the wrong paint, and it starts cracking or reacting to the surface? Maybe you didn’t realise you needed a primer? You might end up having to hire a professional to fix the job. Meaning you’ve paid out twice!

Lot’s of things could go wrong. Is it worth the risk?

Final reaction: You’re happy with the colour. It’ll do. However, you certainly won’t be rushing to decorate again anytime soon.

The ‘Hire a professional’ method

There are many benefits to hiring a professional decorator, here are a few of the main ones:

Convenience: A decorator can complete the job whilst you are at work. This minimises the disruption in your home.

Choosing a colour is the only thing you need to worry about when you hire a professional

Choosing a colour is the only thing you need to worry about when you hire a professional

Less hassle: The most strenuous thing you’ll need to do is choose the colour.

Choosing a colour is the only thing you need to worry about when you hire a professional

No driving to and from the paint shop and no pulled muscles from awkwardly reaching behind cabinets.

And no clearing up afterwards! You simply leave the professional to it.

Hiring a professional can often save you money long term

Hiring a professional can often save you money long term

Saves money: Contrary to popular belief, you can often save money by hiring a professional.

Hiring a professional can often save you money long term

There are a few key reasons for this.

It takes a lot more tools than you think to do a proper decorating job. A professional will often spend thousands on getting the right equipment.

1.Professionals already have all the tools to do a proper job.

It takes a lot more tools than you think to do a proper decorating job. A professional will often spend thousands on getting the right equipment.

Think about it, decorators don’t drive round with a van full of tools for fun. You need all of them to do a quality job. Buying all the kit yourself would cost thousands of pounds.

2. Professional painters and decorators know how to pick the best materials for the job.

Understanding the best paints and preparation products on the market means the work will last much longer.

If you don’t want to be repainting again in 6 months, you need to choose quality materials.

Decorators know this…and as an extra bonus, they usually get cheaper trade prices!

3. Professionals not only work quicker, but they will finish on time. Every hour you spend doing it yourself is wasted free time, or worse, time you could be spending making money at work. Think about how much your time is worth to you. Does it make sense to essentially pay yourself to decorate your own home?

Professionals are insured: If an accident were to happen, then a hired professional will be insured. This means you don’t have to worry about damages skyrocketing the cost of your project.

Safe set ups for decorating are often not considered by DIYers

Health and safety: There are risks with any form of DIY. Working at height is a big one for decorating projects. Whether you’re up a step ladder cutting in the ceiling or working in a more dangerous situation like over the stairs or outside doing the 1st floor windows. The risk is very real and must be considered.

Lead based paints also pose a threat. If your home was built pre 1978 lead based paints may well have been used. A decorator will know how to safely prepare surfaces like this. Do you?

An example of the level of filling and repair work a professional will do to ensure you get a perfectly smooth finish.

The wow factor: Let’s face it, one of the main reasons you want to redecorate is to get the wow factor.

Whether it’s the smile on your daughter’s face seeing her new bedroom, or having guests compliment you on how great your living room looks.

It’s a great feeling.

Doing it yourself often doesn’t quite deliver these results. Afterall, you probably skimped on the preparation and didn’t give it that third coat of paint that it needed. Plus your cutting it was a bit rubbish.

It is all a bit underwhelming.

An example of the level of filling and repair work a professional will do to ensure you get a perfectly smooth finish.

Compare that to a professional job and it’s a whole different story.

Professionals know that preparation is 90% of the job and they do not cut corners.

A pro will make your walls look so smooth they seem brand new again. The lines will be crisp and sharp. And the colour will be perfectly solid.

It looks like a showroom.

A proper decorating job can look amazing

Final reaction: It looks amazing and you can’t wait to show it off to your friends and family.

You are already excited about the next project.

And as an extra bonus, it has probably increased the value and saleability of your home!

Five Ways to Embrace the Darker Evenings

Five tips to embrace the darker evenings

This weekend the clocks go back and the evening become darker.

But lets look at the Positives, we get an extra hour of sleep and opportunities for cosiness have just massively increased.

Of course there are going to be negatives, there’s the darker evenings. Don’t worry though, we’ve come up with a few things to help keep the winter blues away

DON’T STOP BEING ACTIVE!!!

Never stop activities because the days are getting shorter.

Don’t think that because it gets dark earlier we should all hide away inside and just watch TV.

All good if that’s your preference however it’s the perfect time of year to go out and appreciate the beautiful scenery of the autumn-winter. The air is so crisp and fresh too!

LIGHT UP THE DARK SPACES IN YOUR HOME

It’s getting darker outside but that doesn’t mean it has to get darker inside too. Extra indoor lights create a brighter ambiance that’ll help you forget the nights are drawing in. Get some fairy lights up, light a few candles or if you’re lucky enough to have an open fire then get it on, it all adds to a happier atmosphere to counteract the darker evenings.

EMBRACE MORNINGS

The darkness creeps up on us a little earlier each night now and sadly it’s only going to get worse, before it gets better. Why not beat it by swapping your late nights for earlier starts? You’ll see more hours of daylight which can only be beneficial! Make sure that you prepare yourself for the chillier mornings though – keep your slippers and dressing gown by your bed… otherwise when your alarm goes off you’ll find it hard to jump out of bed and seize the day!

WINTER COOKING

Why not cook some delicious seasonal vegetables… pumpkin, swede, sweet potato? All are known to be packed full of fibre, antioxidants and vitamin C, perfect for boosting the serotonin levels to keep your cravings at bay.

Finally, it’s not all about seasonal vegetables and soups, it’s the best time of year to give yourself a little indulgent treat too… did we hear you mention a creamy hot chocolate in your favourite mug Mmm, ideal to hug you from the inside on a wintery day! Hot Choicolate Mugs

images (2).jpg

GET ACTIVE AND EXERCISE

Exercise is very important this time of year… it warms up the body, helps combat tiredness and gets the endorphins pumping. Choose whatever suits you best; you could go outside for a brisk walk or run, stay inside at the gym for a mega workout or practise some yoga in your own front room? It’s true that the weather outside may not be so inviting sometimes however studies have shown that exercising indoors in winter has a positive impact on fighting winter blues by improving general mental health and vitality. Whatever you enjoy, just make sure that exercise isn’t left out now the days are getting shorter.

Are You Thinking of Selling your House?

The No. 1 Decorating Job that can add 25% to the value of your property

When you start thinking of how you can add value to your home, the usual ideas spring to mind. Projects such as -

An Extension

Garage Conversion

New Kitchen or Bathroom.

Now these are all “big” projects to undertake and take a lot of time, energy, planning and the most importantly MONEY!!

However I think you might be surprised to find out you can get a lot more “BANG FOR YOUR BUCKS”

Dulux have some good news if your budget won’t stretch to costly transformations. A straightforward paint job could be all you need to impress potential buyers.

According to new research from Dulux, a fresh coat of paint could increase a home’s perceived value by nearly a quarter, since almost a third of Brits expect to pay 25 per cent more for a freshly painted home.

Painting your exterior walls or front door isn’t just about keeping up with the Joneses any more.

Social media plays a big part, with 2.6 million Brits admitting they post photos of house exteriors to their Instagram, Twitter and Facebook accounts at least once a month.

That perhaps explains why an Instagrammable exterior is so crucial to potential buyers, and the fact that 93 per cent of Brits are more likely to attend a viewing if the exterior of the house is well maintained.

A jungle of a garden and windows are among our top bugbears, but what irritates us the most is a drab front door.

Not only that, research reveals we will take an average of 10 seconds to make a judgement on a person having seen the colour of their front door. 10 Seconds?

So while you may spend months debating what colour to paint the living room, or whether to redecorate your bedroom,

it might be time to give your outside walls and doors more thought.

When is the last time you painted the house?

Despite the big difference painting the exterior can make, most Brits haven’t refreshed the exterior of their house in more than eight years, while one in five admit it’s been more than 15 years.

Most proffesional Decorators recommend re-decorating exteriors between 3 and 5 years as it is the most cost effective way to look after the outside of a property.

Hiring a Painter and Decorator to do the job for you will set you back anywhere between £1000 and £5,500, depending on the size of your home, the condition of the property and the number of storeys that it has.

What Colour add the most £££ ?

Embracing Blue apparently adds an average of £4,000.

Shortly behind blue is white, which adds roughly £3,400 to the value of a house.

Red comes in third, adding £1,800.

So if you’ve always dreamed of a pink front door or a freshly white-painted exterior, now’s the time to give your home a facelift.

Our new facility now means we have a proper spraying setup and can provide a much higher quality of service and most importantly finish. This means that we can now have your kitchen doors removed sprayed and replaced usually within one week.

Wood3.jpg

Benefits of Re-Spraying your Kitchen

Normally a Kitchen layout works, it just needs the “look” updated

Re-Spraying a kitchen is a lot less expense than a replacement kitchen

It is quicker than installing a whole new kitchen

You can continue to use your kitchen (minus the doors etc)

There is no need to disconnect any supply’s such as gas, electricity, or water

Much less disruption to you and your family

Colours and Finishes

We use a highly durable paints, which is fully washable and is available in a variety of sheen levels from Matt through to Gloss.

We have a complete range of the markets leading colours including the very popular Heritage and National Trust colour palette’s are all available from including but not restricted to Farrow and Ball, Little Greene, Dulux, Anker Stuy, Caparol and Hesse Lingal.

How Our Process Works

DAY ONE - We collect all of the removal parts from your kitchen, such as doors, draws, pelmets etc and these are resprayed to a blemish free finish in our local workshop. We then tape and mask up all the areas in your kitchen that need painting as required.

DAY TWO - The kitchen carcasses are painted with a water-based Adhesion Primer, followed by two Topcoats in your chosen colour and finish. As standard we paint the edge of the carcases, however for an extra cost we can paint the inside of kitchen units.

DAY THREE & FOUR – The kitchen doors etc are prepared, filled and de-greased ready for the first coat of Adhesion Primer. One more coat of Adhesion Primer followed by two Topcoats.

DAY FIVE - Your removed items are refitted on site, this is a good time to replace door handles and knobs etc. Your kitchen is then fully completed. The turnaround time is usually one week, from start to finish.

Most of the kitchen resprays we work on are priced between £1000.00 and £2000.00. Most of the kitchen resprays we work on are priced between £1000.00 and £2000.00.

How much does it cost to spray paint kitchen cabinets?

If you allow approximately £80.00 per cabinet you should be able to calculate a rough price for your project.

Most of the kitchen resprays we work on are priced between £1000.00 and £2000.00. That is far less than the cost of a new kitchen and the finish will last more than 10-years.

Our Pricing (for budgeting purposes only)

£90.00 per Cabinet (Door only)

£120.00 per larder and pantry cabinet (Door only)

£90.00 per built-in kitchen appliance facing

The above costs are for budget purposes only, a full on site survey would need to be carried out for us to provide a Quotation (we don’t provide estimates)

As I am sure you can appreciate all projects different therefore our quotes are bespoke to each individual customer.

Because the cost to spray paint kitchen cabinets is 50 to 70% less expensive than a new replacement, spraying is a good way to save money and create a kitchen that looks completely different,

I’d bet your friends wouldn’t even notice it was your old kitchen sprayed?

Don’t Stop at your Kitchen Units we can also transform.

How much do Painters and Decorators charge per day? NEVER PAY DAYWORK!!

How much do Painters and Decorators charge per day?

Paying Daywork can be a very cost effective if you have a particular job needing to be completed.

For example Stripping wallpaper doesn't require a highly skilled decorator to carry out the work, therefore a brush hand or labourer would be a the best choice of labour to complete that task.

However a Decorator who hangs wallpaper is considered a highly skilled person and therefore attracts much higher rates.

Spraying again will add to the costs. Dust free sanding is another area that will increase the price although the finish and health benefits to all are incredible. So "day rate" depends on experience as well as tooling for the specified job. Someone starting out will usually be less than an established decorator. And an established decorator who's not busy will be cheaper than a busy one.

As mentioned earlier day rate very much depends on the skill set of the individual decorator, you will be paying for the Decorators knowledge and experience and this in itself can help save you money.

Day Rates can be anything from £120.00 to £300.00 a day.

Consideration must be made on the overall service, finish, quality and compared like for like to reveal the true cost.

For individual jobs i.e. feature wallpaper on one wall you would be approximately £95.00 to £150.00 with materials included.

However overall it is usual far better to hire a Painter and Decorator on a price per job rather than pay Daywork, as this is better for you as the customer.
